This just in...
I heard on the radio on the way home from work today that an elementary school in Marshalltown, Iowa turned away a 2nd grade girl because she can't speak Spanish....read again...not that she couldn't speak English (the legislatively sanctioned official language of Iowa), but that she couldn't speak Spanish.
The school is apparently part of a tax-funded pilot program to be completely bilingual. Si usted no habla espaƱol, ninguna escuela.
If this were reversed there would already be legal papers filed and it would be all over the national news. I looked on all of the major Des Moines TV news sites and there wasn't a single mention of it.

I listened to and watched the news today, and you're right, I never heard a thing!
Arrggg...what is this country coming to??
Believe it or not, we have a large percentage of Hispanics in certain areas - Marshalltown being one of them. There is a large meat packing plant there. It hires Hispanics almost exclusively and has been in trouble in the past for hiring illegals. It was reported in the story that Marshalltown is currently approximately 25% Hispanic.
I'd be filing my lawsuit anyway, if the school has federal funding, they can't do that legally. This is American dang it!!
Isearched for this news and didn't find any thing. This is sad! Ther has got to be a good story here! Jen this is my first vist I saw you over a Brendas and I talk to Brent all the time. Guess what... I am a GOLF NUT! You are the first one that has said I play golf!

Welcome! Hope you'll stop back often!
I love golf. Have played since I was a kid. The whole family plays - even my little ones.
I tried to click on your name to go to your blog, but it said you weren't sharing your profile so I couldn't find you.
Somehow this doesn't suprise me at all. There's lots of things to be thankful about in this country and I truely am thankful for them. But more and more I find myself mystified and ashamed to hear somethings like this.
Jen -
Are you sure you're not from Texas??? lol...
I grew up in a predominantly hispanic town in the Texas Panhandle. Unfortunately, it probably IS legal for the school to turn the girl away - so many programs are bending over backwards to accomodate special-interest groups. And we all know that for years it's been politically correct (not to mention legal) to have beauty pageants specifically for non-white contestants, etc.... Now, I'm NOT trying to say that I'm against treating everyone equally - regardless of their skin color or racial make-up - but isn't this kind of thing perpetuating racial separateness?? And if it's ok to have a Miss Black USA, a Latin Grammy Award - then why can't there be the same thing for those of us who are just plain ol' white folks who have no clue where we came from?? (oh i'm gonna get ding'd for this one, aren't i?)...
Oh, and in case anyone reading is wondering and maybe a little angry - my kids grew up not even KNOWING there WAS a different word for people of different races (black, hispanic, asian, white, etc...) they just described their classmates by the way they looked - and yes, they sometimes would talk about a boy or girl in their class that was "brown", but they certainly never thought it was a bad thing - and that's because I never believed that it was. To them it was the same as saying one had red hair or curly hair. It never occurred to them that there might be such a thing as any race but one - the human race.
I know there was something else I wanted to comment on, but when I stepped up on my soapbox, the altitude must have impaired my memory. ...osm
